The jewel of Argosaronikos

Spetses is one of the most beautiful and aristocratic islands of Argosaronikos, and this is something that everyone who has visited at least once knows. Meaning that it is an ideal choice for the weekends you have "run out" in the city. Spetses, despite their small size and the few permanent residents, is an island with many events and activities that will give you magical moments in your vacation.

In the period 1821-1832, Spetses played a leading role in the Greek Revolution. The Spetses first raised the flag of the Revolution on April 2 and 3 of 1821,  with great ceremonies and cannonades. The Spetses fleet, consisting of commercial ships of the Spetsiots, took part in a large number of naval battles, such as Armatas, as well as in sieges, namely the sieges of Nafplion and Monemvasia. At this time, heroic names such as Laskarina Bouboulina, Andreas Miaoulis, Hatzigiannis Mexis and Kosmas Barbatsis, names that now hold a high position in Hellenic History, make their appearance.

After the end of the Revolution and the creation of the Greek state, Spetses are overshadowed by the economic development of Athens. They begin to decline as a commercial and shipping center and at the same time reduce their population. At the beginning of the 20th century, the modernization of the island and the upgrading of the island to the resort of the Athenian society began, mainly at the initiative of the national benefactor Sotirios Anargyros. He pines the largest part of the island, which until then had no significant vegetation, builds the first aqueduct of the island and the famous hotel Poseidonio. In 1927 Anargyrios and Korgialenios School of Spetses operates, which really raises the cultural level of the island.
